Overpriced Embroidery and Craft at Unofficial Market Stalls

Unofficial vendors near the Mercado dos Lavradores and along the Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas sell items claimed to be authentic Madeira embroidery (bordado madeirense) or wickerwork at inflated prices. Much of the goods are mass-produced imports without the IBTAM certification that genuine Madeira embroidery carries. The certification label is legally required on authentic pieces and its absence is a reliable indicator of fakes.
