Government Advisories
Venezuela: Airports Closed After Devastating Twin Earthquakes
HighTwin 7.5 and 7.2 magnitude earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24-25, 2026, killing 235+ people. Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas has been closed due to structural damage with no reopening timeline announced.
The earthquakes caused a partial collapse of the airport terminal roof and widespread infrastructure damage across Caracas. A national state of emergency has been declared. All commercial flights are suspended pending safety inspections. Travelers with upcoming trips to Venezuela should contact their airline immediately for rebooking options and monitor official government channels for updates.
Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo & Uganda — Entry Screening and Restrictions
HighAn Ebola (Bundibugyo virus) outbreak in the DR Congo and Uganda has exceeded 1,000 cases — the second largest on record — with cases reported in Uganda's capital, Kampala. Several countries, including the US, Canada, and Rwanda, have imposed entry screening or restrictions for travelers from DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.
As of June 22, the DRC confirmed more than 1,000 cases, with related cases in Kampala. The US now requires travelers recently in DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan to enter via designated airports (Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Houston, or JFK) for enhanced screening and 21-day symptom monitoring, and Uganda has suspended direct DRC flights and some border crossings. Travelers to the region should check CDC and local guidance before and after travel.
Gulf Alert: Iran Strikes on UAE, Qatar & Saudi — Reconsider Travel
MediumIran launched coordinated missile and drone attacks on the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait on July 12, 2026. Australia's Smartraveller and the UK FCDO now advise reconsidering travel to the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia; Gulf airspace over Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha can close at short notice and flights may be cancelled with little warning.
Air defences engaged incoming missiles and drones over multiple Gulf hubs on July 12. Airports remain largely operational, but Air Canada, British Airways and Lufthansa have suspended service to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha into the autumn, and reroutes are adding 2-3 hours to long-haul flights. Build in buffer time for connections, monitor your airline, keep flexible tickets, and watch for further escalation.
State Dept: Oman Level 3 — Authorized Departure of Non-Emergency Personnel
MediumThe U.S. State Department authorized the departure of non-emergency government personnel from Oman on June 27, 2026, citing an ongoing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran and risk of terrorist violence. Commercial flight disruptions are ongoing and Muscat-area travelers should expect continued instability.
Following the onset of U.S.–Iran hostilities in February 2026, Oman has faced an elevated threat from potential Iranian drone and missile strikes, with significant disruptions to commercial airspace. This authorized departure (not an ordered departure) allows non-essential U.S. government staff to leave voluntarily — a meaningful escalation signal within the existing Level 3 advisory. The Do Not Travel warning applies to the Yemen border zone. Independent travelers visiting Muscat should monitor flight schedules daily, confirm their trip insurance covers conflict-related disruptions, and register with the STEP program at step.state.gov.
Smartraveller: Reconsider Travel to Israel — Downgraded to Level 3
MediumAustralia's Smartraveller updated Israel's advisory on June 23, 2026, lowering it from Level 4 to Level 3 (Reconsider your need to travel) due to an unpredictable but improved security situation. Border areas near Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria remain at Do Not Travel.
The downgrade reflects easing of the broader Middle East conflict but volatile conditions persist. Travel to the Gaza border zone, areas near Lebanon, and near Syria's border remains strongly advised against. Travelers to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, or Eilat should monitor conditions daily, register with their consulate, and maintain clear evacuation plans. The situation can deteriorate rapidly.
Trending Scam Stories
Summer Surge: AI Fake-Booking Sites and QR "Quishing" Target Tourists
MediumRegulators warn of a summer 2026 spike in pixel-perfect fake airline/hotel/rental sites and fake QR codes stuck over real ones at restaurants, parking meters, and transit stops that steal payment details.
The FTC flags AI-generated booking sites with fake reviews and SSL certificates delivered as "confirmation" messages, while INTERPOL warns of "quishing" — fraudulent QR codes overlaid on legitimate ones at tourist sites. Type booking URLs directly or use official apps, verify QR destinations before entering card details, and pay by credit card for dispute rights. 2025 saw 64,000+ travel-fraud reports and ~$274M in losses.
Fake Airline "Customer Service" Numbers Trap Rebooking Travelers
MediumAfter a flight schedule change, travelers who Google an airline's customer-service number are reaching scammers who charge for free services or fake rebookings — one traveler was hit for over $12,000.
The scam surges around summer schedule changes: a traveler gets a legitimate "your connection changed" email, the rebooking link fails, they search for the airline's phone number, and a sponsored/fake listing connects them to a fraudster. Because the victim authorizes the charge, card fraud protection often will not cover it. Never dial a number from a search ad — use the number on your ticket, the airline's official app, or the back of your card.
Paris: "Friendship Bracelet" Scam Resurges at Sacré-Cœur
MediumMen near the Sacré-Cœur steps in Montmartre tie a "free" string bracelet onto tourists' wrists, then aggressively demand payment — often working in groups that surround and pressure the victim.
A viral video this week reignited attention on the long-running Montmartre bracelet scam. Do not let anyone touch your wrist or take anything "free" from a stranger; keep hands in pockets, say a firm "no," and walk away. If surrounded, move toward a crowded café or shop entrance.
Summer Pickpocket Surge Peaks in Paris, Rome & Barcelona
MediumPickpocketing and bag-snatching spike sharply in July across Europe's top cities — reporting shows Paris Metro pickpockets are roughly 10x more active in summer than in winter. Paris, Rome and Barcelona are the worst-hit, with hotspots at the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Colosseum, Termini station and La Rambla.
Peak-season crowds and heat draw organized theft crews to major landmarks and transit hubs. Keep valuables in a zipped inner pocket or money belt, stay alert for distraction tactics (friendship-bracelet touts, fake charity petitions, the dropped-ring ploy), and be especially vigilant on crowded metro cars and at ticket machines.
Mallorca: Viral Videos Show Pickpockets Targeting Tourists in Palma
MediumViral videos circulating in July 2026 show pickpockets targeting distracted and elderly tourists across Palma de Mallorca — including near Palma Cathedral — as the island's peak summer crowds swell (13.5M visitors in 2025).
Thieves work busy tourist zones and nightlife areas, targeting people who look distracted, overloaded with bags, or intoxicated. Use an anti-theft cross-body bag, keep phones off café tables, and stay alert in crowds around Palma Cathedral and the old town.
How it works
Alerts expire automatically
Every alert has an expiry date. Government advisories run for 30 days; trending scam stories run for 14 days. Each morning the editorial review cycle checks whether the underlying source still supports the alert. If the advisory has been downgraded or the story is no longer active, the alert is marked inactive and removed from this page.
This keeps the list short and trustworthy — if it's here, it's still current.
