Government Advisories
USA: 120+ Rights Groups Warn World Cup Visitors of Immigration and Safety Risks
MediumAmnesty International and over 120 civil society organizations issued a travel advisory on April 23 warning World Cup visitors to exercise increased caution in the US, citing heightened immigration enforcement, racial profiling, and risks for LGBTQ+ travelers across all 11 host cities.
The advisory warns nationals of 50 countries may face visa bond requirements of up to $15,000. Expedited removal is actively used at ports of entry, and LGBTQ+ travelers and people of color face elevated profiling risk. All major host cities are affected — New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and six others. Travelers are urged to carry documentation, register with their embassy, and know their rights before arrival.
Spain: Indefinite ATC Strike Disrupting Canary Islands & Regional Airport Flights
MediumAn indefinite air traffic controllers' strike against tower operator SAERCO has hit 14 Spanish airports since April 17, with Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Seville and Vigo worst affected; on April 24 it escalated into a triple crisis alongside Groundforce and Azul Handling disputes.
Up to 2.6 million passengers and 20,000 flight movements could be disrupted in the first month alone — Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI, British Airways, Vueling, Iberia and Binter Canarias passengers should expect last-minute cancellations and rolling delays. EU261 cash compensation is generally NOT payable because ATC strikes are classified as "extraordinary circumstances." Travellers should check airline status the morning of departure, arrive 3+ hours early, and consider rebooking to mainland hubs (Madrid Barajas, Barcelona El Prat) which are unaffected by the SAERCO dispute.
Japan: Elevated Aftershock Risk Following 7.7 Sanriku Earthquake
HighA 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Sanriku coast on April 20; major tsunami warnings were downgraded by late evening, but authorities issued a subsequent earthquake advisory warning of elevated aftershock risk in northern Japan for the coming week.
The quake affected Iwate, Aomori, and Miyagi prefectures, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuations for 182,000+ residents. If your itinerary includes the Sanriku coast or remote eastern Hokkaido, consider rerouting to safer regions. Monitor NHK World and Japan's JMA for live updates. Most major tourist destinations (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) are unaffected.
FCDO: Avoid All But Essential Travel to UAE
HighUK Foreign Office updated UAE advice on 14 Apr 2026, warning of ongoing missile and drone threat from regional escalation.
The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the UAE following regional escalation. The Iranian regime has stated intent to target US and Israeli-linked locations. Attacks could occur at short notice. Travelers should limit movements to essential journeys, avoid crowds, and know shelter locations.

Italy: 'Pickpocketing 2.0' — Hidden POS Readers Stealing Contactless Payments
MediumA woman in Sorrento was arrested April 20 with a concealed portable POS terminal used to make microtransactions from tourists' contactless cards without their knowledge; Rome tourist hotspots are also targeted.
The device exploits NFC contactless payment technology — proximity of just 1–2 cm is enough. Travelers should use RFID-blocking wallets, keep cards in shielded sleeves, or store cards away from outer pockets. Standard pickpocket awareness is not enough to stop this silent theft method.
Vietnam: Fake Travel Agency Facebook Accounts Targeting April 30–May 1 Holiday Bookings
MediumFraudsters are buying verified Facebook accounts, renaming them after reputable hotels and agencies, and collecting deposits for holiday travel — then vanishing with the money.
Demand surges around the April 30–May 1 national holiday create ideal conditions for booking fraud. Criminals run paid ads on impersonated verified pages offering attractive tour packages. Travelers should only book directly through official websites or verified in-person offices, and should never transfer deposits to personal bank accounts. Report any fraud to the nearest police station.
Athens: Organized Pickpocket Groups Target Tourists at Season Start
LowDutch tourists confronted a pickpocket in central Athens on April 19; authorities warn organized theft groups are active in Syntagma, Monastiraki, and Plaka as the tourist season begins.
Pickpockets operate in groups and focus on crowded tourist areas especially around the Acropolis approaches. Keep bags in front, avoid showing phones/cameras in crowds, and be alert to distraction tactics. Incidents are expected to rise as visitor numbers increase through May.
Istanbul: AI Deepfake Celebrity Endorsements Lure Tourists to Overpriced Restaurants
LowScammers are using AI-generated videos of celebrities like David Beckham to endorse ordinary Istanbul restaurants, deceiving tourists into paying inflated prices.
Digital boards and social posts featuring hyper-realistic deepfakes of global celebrities promoting modest eateries have been spotted across tourist areas. Genuine popular restaurants rarely rely on celebrity endorsements — verify any restaurant via TripAdvisor, Google Maps, or the official Istanbul tourism website before dining.
Nepal: $20M Fake Rescue Ring — 32 Charged, 11 Arrested
HighNepalese authorities charged 32 guides, helicopter operators and hospital staff in a massive trekking insurance fraud affecting 4,700+ visitors.
The scheme involved manufacturing false medical emergencies to trigger costly helicopter evacuations billed to travel insurers. ~300 fraudulent rescues were filed 2022–2025. Trekkers departing from Pokhara into the Annapurna region are advised to verify guide and helicopter operator credentials before departure.
