After initial contact, scammers send professional-looking invoice links to phishing sites that mimic legitimate vacation rental platforms, capturing credit card details or collecting a deposit via wire transfer. Properties are typically cloned from real listings on legitimate platforms. Victims discover the fraud when they arrive and find the property occupied by legitimate guests or the contact has gone silent.
