Vendors in the markets around Halfaouine square and the Souk des Chechias sell counterfeit branded goods — sunglasses, handbags, trainers, and watches — described as "original surplus" or "factory seconds" from European brands. Quality is uniformly poor and buyers have no recourse. Customs authorities at Tunis-Carthage airport regularly confiscate counterfeit goods from departing travellers.
