Budapest Tourist Scams: Ruin Bar Overcharging and the Taxi Trap
Budapest has become one of Europe's top party destinations, which has created a reliable scam ecosystem around Ruin Bars in the Jewish Quarter and taxi services from the airport. Most scams here are financial and non-violent.
The Ruin Bar Overcharging Trap Some bars in the Ruin Bar district (around Kazinczy utca) bring drinks without a menu and present enormous bills at the end of the night. Prices are not displayed and are set at whatever the staff decides to charge. Always ask for a menu with prices before ordering. If a menu is refused, leave.
Taxi Overcharging from Budapest Airport Unlicensed taxis at Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport are a known problem. Only use Főtaxi (the official airport taxi) at the designated taxi rank, or pre-book a transfer through your accommodation. The fare to central Budapest by official taxi should be approximately HUF 8,000–12,000.
Fake Currency Exchange Exchange offices near Váci utca and in the main tourist corridor advertise attractive rates, then apply hidden fees at the transaction. Always use ATMs from major banks or the official OTP Bank exchange counters.
The Friendly Local Setup A well-dressed local strikes up conversation near the Chain Bridge or Vörösmarty Square and guides you to a bar or restaurant where they earn commission. Tea invitations and friendly conversations are fine — just feel no obligation to follow anyone.
Practical Tips for Budapest - Book airport transfers through your hotel or use the official Főtaxi counter only - Confirm all prices before ordering in any bar or restaurant in the tourist district - The public transport system (BKK) is safe, affordable, and reliable — validate your ticket on entry - Forint is the local currency; Euro is sometimes accepted but at poor exchange rates
