Cancun Timeshare Scams: How to Decline Persistent Sales Tactics
Cancun's timeshare industry is large, legal, and operates with persistence that surprises most visitors. Salespeople work hotel lobbies, airport arrivals halls, and tourist areas with offers of free activities in exchange for a "short" presentation that routinely runs four to six hours.
How the Setup Works
You're approached with an offer: free breakfast, free boat trip, or discounted tours in exchange for attending a 90-minute presentation about a resort property. The presentation uses high-pressure sales tactics, manufactured urgency ("this offer ends today"), and sometimes alcohol to push visitors toward signing contracts that are difficult to exit.
Warning Signs
- β’Any unsolicited offer of free activities in exchange for attending a meeting
- β’Claims that the offer is only valid today
- β’Requests for a credit card as a "deposit" to hold your free gift
If You're Already in a Presentation
- β’You are not legally obligated to buy anything
- β’In Mexico, you have a 5-business-day cancellation right (the Profeco law) for timeshare contracts β use it in writing immediately if you signed anything
- β’Do not sign anything under pressure, regardless of what the salesperson says about the offer expiring
How to Decline at the Hotel
- β’Politely and firmly say "No thank you" and keep walking β engaging at all extends the interaction
- β’If approached in the hotel lobby, notify the front desk that you're being approached
- β’Book activities through your hotel concierge or reputable tour operators directly
If You Signed a Contract
