How to Avoid Taxi Scams in Bangkok (2026 Guide)

Bangkok has millions of legitimate taxi trips every day — but a small number of drivers specifically target tourists with rigged meters, unnecessary detours, and the infamous "closed attraction" setup. Knowing the patterns in advance makes them easy to spot and avoid.

The Most Common Bangkok Taxi Scams

Rigged or Refused Meters Some drivers will claim their meter is broken and offer a flat rate — always higher than what the meter would show. Others start the meter but have it calibrated to run faster than legal limits. Always insist on the meter before getting in.

The "Grand Palace is Closed" Scam A driver or tuk-tuk operator tells you the attraction you're heading to is closed today for a holiday or ceremony. They offer to take you to a gem shop or tailor instead — where they earn a commission. The Grand Palace is almost never closed to tourists. Ignore this entirely.

Airport Taxi Overcharging Unofficial taxis outside Suvarnabhumi Airport charge 3–5x the metered rate. Always use the official metered taxi queue inside the arrivals hall, or book a Grab ride before exiting.

Tuk-Tuk Tours Tuk-tuk drivers offering cheap city tours almost always include mandatory stops at shops. The tour is a delivery mechanism for commission-based selling, not sightseeing.

How to Stay Safe

  • •Use **Grab** (the regional Uber equivalent) for all point-to-point travel — fares are fixed and shown upfront
  • •If using a metered taxi, confirm the driver will use the meter before you get in
  • •Always use the official taxi queue inside the airport arrivals hall
  • •If a driver tells you an attraction is closed, get out and verify independently
  • •For tuk-tuks, negotiate the full fare upfront and skip any "short detour" offers

What to Do if You're Overcharged If you arrive at your destination and the driver demands more than the meter shows, pay what the meter shows and leave. Screaming matches in public rarely go anywhere. Note the taxi number (displayed on the dashboard) if you want to file a complaint with the Department of Land Transport.
