Phuket Jet Ski and Beach Scams: How the Damage Deposit Trick Works

Phuket's beaches — particularly Patong — have a well-documented pattern of jet ski and beach equipment rental scams where operators claim pre-existing damage was caused by the tourist and demand large cash payments. The scam is organized and persistent.

How the Jet Ski Damage Scam Works

You rent a jet ski, return it, and are immediately shown damage the operator claims you caused — a scratch, a dent, a broken component. In many cases the damage was there before you rented and was hidden or covered during handover. The operator demands cash payment of ฿10,000–50,000 (USD $300–1,500) and may become aggressive or involve associates who prevent you from leaving.

In some versions, the damage is actually caused by the operator after you return the equipment.

How to Protect Yourself Before Renting

  • Film a complete video walkthrough of all equipment before taking possession — every surface, every angle, in good lighting
  • Do the walkthrough with the operator present and confirm verbally on camera that they agree no damage exists
  • Never hand over your passport as a deposit — this is used as leverage. Leave a copy only
  • If an operator refuses to let you film, do not rent from them

On Return

  • Film another complete walkthrough immediately on return, again with the operator present
  • If damage is claimed that was not in your pre-rental video, you have evidence to contest it
  • In genuine disputes, contact the Tourist Police (1155) rather than local police
  • Credit card chargebacks are available if payment was made by card

General Beach Rental Rules in Phuket

  • Rent only from operators on the main beach area with permanent setups, not from individuals approaching you
  • Confirm total pricing before any activity, including all fuel charges and fees
  • The Tourist Police hotline (1155) is specifically set up to handle these disputes and is effective
