Along the main approach road into Chefchaouen and near the medina entrances, sellers pose as representatives of women's cooperatives, inviting tourists in for a "free" demonstration of argan oil pressing or spice preparation. Products sold inside are marked up four to ten times fair market value, and guides who bring tourists to these shops earn commissions of 30–50%. The oil sold is frequently diluted with cheaper cosmetic-grade oils or entirely synthetic. Pressure to buy increases significantly once you are inside the shop. Decline all unsolicited invitations to cooperatives or demonstrations, especially when the invite comes from a street tout or an unofficial guide. Legitimate women's cooperatives in the Rif region do not require street referrals. If you want argan oil, buy from a fixed-price supermarché or a shop with clearly posted prices.
