Several seafood and tourist-oriented restaurants along the Msasani Peninsula and near the Slipway shopping complex present verbal menus without prices, then deliver bills that are two to four times the price a local would pay. Items not ordered may appear on the bill, and staff claim card machines are broken to avoid a paper trail. Tourists who question the bill are sometimes pressured with claims that police will be called.
