Promoters around Puerto del Carmen's Avenida de las Playas and the Playa Blanca promenade hand out scratch cards to tourists that always reveal a "prize" — a free gift, a tablet, or an overnight hotel stay. Collecting the prize requires attending a holiday club or timeshare presentation that typically lasts two to four hours and involves high-pressure sales tactics. The free gifts are often cheap or withheld entirely.
