Informal money changers and some exchange kiosks in Maceiós Centro and near the city bus terminal offer USD/EUR exchange rates slightly above official rates to attract tourists, then shortchange customers through sleight of hand when counting out the reais notes. The exchange is done quickly and in a busy setting that makes recount difficult. Victims rarely challenge the count openly.
