Many restaurants in Maceiós Ponta Verde and Jatiúca tourist zones automatically place bread, olives, and appetisers on the table as if they are complimentary. The couvert (cover charge) for these items — typically R$15–R$30 per person — is not disclosed until the bill arrives. Tourists who have eaten the food have no practical recourse.
