Street vendors in Ciudad Vieja and around the Mercado del Puerto approach tourists selling mate kits, leather goods, and Uruguayan handicrafts at prices ten to twenty times the local market rate. When tourists compare prices later at the Tristan Narvaja Sunday market or official stores, the markup becomes apparent. Some vendors apply high-pressure tactics and follow tourists for several blocks.
