Exchange bureaux in Parikia apply unfavourable rates and shortchange tourists by folding notes or making counting errors that are hard to spot in a busy transaction. The shortchange technique is most common when exchanging €100 and €200 notes where the correct return amount in smaller denominations is harder to verify quickly.
