Cashiers at tourist-area shops and restaurants in Lakeside frequently "forget" to give correct change or withhold part of it, hoping the tourist will not notice. Nepalese rupees in large denominations make miscounting easy to disguise. Always count your change immediately before leaving the counter. State clearly how much change you expect — "I gave you 1,000 NPR, the bill is 750 NPR, so I need 250 NPR change" — and count every note. Never walk away from a transaction without verifying the full amount.
