Several restaurants in the downtown St. John's core, particularly around Water Street and near the Arts and Culture Centre, maintain two effective pricing levels — one for regulars and one for tourists, achieved through verbal specials priced well above menu items, premium charge for local seafood preparation, and hidden service fees added to bills. Toutons, fish and chips, and cod tongues marketed as signature NL dishes are sometimes priced significantly higher for tourist-table ordering than for locals.
