Bali Taxi and Transport Guide: How to Get Around Without Being Overcharged
Bali, IndonesiaBali's transport system is confusing for first-time visitors and overcharging is common. Here is how to use Grab, Blue Bird taxis, and negotiate private drivers fairly.
Grab in Bali Grab operates in most of Bali and is the most transparent option — fares are shown upfront and paid in-app. However, Grab pickups are prohibited in some tourist areas (including parts of Kuta and Seminyak) due to pressure from local taxi cooperatives. In restricted areas, walk two minutes from the main street before requesting your Grab.
Blue Bird Taxis Blue Bird is the only metered taxi company in Bali that is consistently reliable. Their taxis are light blue with a Blue Bird logo. Always confirm the meter is running before the journey starts. Avoid any taxi that refuses to use the meter or is not clearly a Blue Bird vehicle.
Private Drivers For day trips (Ubud, Uluwatu, Kintamani, Tanah Lot), hiring a private driver for the day (IDR 400,000–600,000 / USD $25–38) is often more efficient and cost-effective than taxis. Book through your accommodation, Klook, or Get Your Guide rather than from drivers who approach you on the street.
Airport Transport Ngurah Rai International Airport has an official taxi counter inside arrivals with fixed prices by zone. Use this rather than drivers who approach you in the arrivals hall. Alternatively, book a hotel transfer in advance.
Motorbike Rentals Renting a motorbike (IDR 70,000–100,000 per day) is common for independent exploration. Ensure your travel insurance covers motorbike accidents (many policies exclude them without an add-on). An international driving permit technically required but rarely checked.
