New York City Tourist Scams: Times Square, Subway, and Street Hustles
New York is one of the safest large cities in the US for tourists, but a small number of well-practiced street hustles operate in Midtown and around major attractions. They are low-violence and financial in nature.
Times Square CD and Mixtape Scam Men approach tourists with CDs or mixtapes, claiming they are up-and-coming musicians. They hand you the CD "for free," then demand payment — often aggressively. Do not accept anything handed to you on the street.
The Costume Character Photo Scam Costumed characters (Elmo, Spider-Man, etc.) in Times Square will pose for photos, then demand $20–40 per person. If you want a photo, agree on the price first. You are not obligated to pay anyone who approaches you.
Subway Showtime Performers announce "showtime" on subway cars and begin acrobatic performances, then collect money from passengers. You are never obligated to pay — ignore or politely decline.
Fake Ticket Sellers Touts outside Madison Square Garden and Broadway theatres sell counterfeit or invalid tickets. Always buy from official box offices, TKTS booth in Times Square (discounted legitimate tickets), or licensed resellers.
Three-Card Monte Shell game operators set up folding tables near tourist areas in Midtown. The game is fixed. Bystanders appear to win but are shills.
Practical Tips for NYC - Use the MTA's official app or pay at the turnstile — never buy MetroCards from individuals - Ignore anyone who approaches you on the street with something to sell or give - Hail yellow cabs from the street or use the Lyft/Uber app — avoid unlicensed car services outside airports - JFK AirTrain + subway is the cheapest airport option; car services from JFK should be booked through the official taxi stand
