How to Protect Your Phone From Theft While Traveling
Smartphones are the most commonly stolen item from tourists worldwide. Learn the physical tactics, settings, and habits that prevent theft and minimize damage if it happens.
Phone theft from tourists is common in major cities worldwide. In many cases it's opportunistic — a distracted tourist, an easy grab, a fast exit. The following habits reduce your exposure dramatically.
Physical Security Habits
- Never put your phone on a restaurant table, especially on outdoor terraces
- Use a crossbody bag or zipped pocket — not a back pocket or open tote
- When using your phone for navigation on the street, stop walking, face a wall or building, then look at the screen
- Be alert after using your phone in a crowded area — thieves follow the movement of putting a phone away
- On public transport, hold your phone against your body or put it away entirely
Motorcycle and Bicycle Snatch Theft
In many cities (Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, Ho Chi Minh City, Bogotá), thieves on motorcycles snatch phones from people walking or standing on sidewalks. This happens in seconds.
**Avoid it:** Don't hold your phone at your side while walking near roads. If you need to look at your map, stop with your back to a building or use a wrist strap.
Settings to Configure Before You Travel
- **Enable Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android)** before you leave
- **Enable Remote Wipe** in your iCloud or Google account settings
- **Use a strong PIN** (not biometrics-only) — biometrics can be forced, PINs cannot
- **Enable screen lock immediately** so thieves can't access your data before you remote wipe
- **Screenshot key documents** (passport, insurance, hotel bookings) stored offline in your Photos app
If Your Phone Is Stolen
1. Use another device or hotel computer to remotely lock and wipe immediately 2. Report to local police — you need a crime report for your insurance claim 3. Contact your bank if you had payment apps active 4. Log out of key accounts via the web (Google, Apple ID, banking) from another device
