Scammers posing as plain-clothes police officers approach tourists in crowded areas, near ATMs, or on the street, accusing them of drug possession, currency violations, or suspicious behavior. They demand on-the-spot cash payments to "resolve" the situation without going to the station.

How to avoid: Always insist on going to an official police station (100 is the emergency number). Legitimate police officers will not demand cash on the street. Ask to see official identification — real officers will comply. Carry copies of your passport and visa rather than originals.

Where: Streets near Panfilov Park and Republic Square, and checkpoints on roads outside Almaty

A local approaches tourists near busy pedestrian areas and shows them a wallet they claim to have just found, asking if they want to share the cash inside. Moments later a confederate appears claiming the wallet is theirs and accuses the tourist of theft, demanding compensation or threatening to call police. The goal is to extort cash or use the distraction to pick the tourist's pockets. This scheme is reported on Almaty's central Arbat pedestrian street (Zhibek Zholy) and around the Panfilov Park area.

How to avoid: Never engage with strangers who approach you with a found wallet or money. Walk away immediately without stopping to look at the contents. If someone becomes aggressive, move toward a shop or busy public space and call the genuine police on 102.

How to avoid: Never accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended. Attend nightlife venues with people you trust and designate someone to stay sober. Share your location with a contact outside the group before entering any nightclub. If you feel suddenly dizzy or unusually intoxicated, ask bar staff for help immediately and do not leave with strangers.
