Budget guesthouses along the Mashraba waterfront strip and the backpacker lanes off El Fanar Street advertise clean en-suite rooms online with sea views, but on arrival guests are shown inferior rooms — smaller, darker, or without the advertised amenities. When guests protest, staff claim the advertised room is occupied and offer an upgrade at an additional nightly charge.
