Accommodation Scams to Avoid — Worldwide Warning Guide
Fake Airbnb listings, misleading hotel photos, and ghost properties can ruin a trip before it starts. These scams are increasingly sophisticated and target travelers booking online.
Most Common Accommodation Scams
Tourists are lured with offers of free theme park tickets, resort stays, or cash gifts in exchange for attending a 90-minute vacation club presentation. The presentation routinely runs 3–4 hours of high-pressure sales tactics. Rewards come loaded with blackout dates and hidden fees.
How to avoid it
Decline any offer of free gifts tied to attending a presentation. If you attend, know you have a legal right to leave at any time. Report demands for upfront fees — this is illegal under Florida law.
Unregistered operators use polished social media pages and unbeatable prices to collect payments for Boracay tours and accommodation that don't exist or are wildly different from advertised.
How to avoid it
Book only through DOT-accredited operators or platforms like Klook, Agoda, or Booking.com. Verify registration with the Malay-Boracay Tourism Office before paying.
Fraudulent Facebook pages impersonate legitimate Cebu resorts with thousands of followers and market-rate pricing, collecting e-wallet payments before disappearing. Victims discover the fraud only on arrival.
How to avoid it
Book only through official resort websites, Agoda, Booking.com, or DOT-accredited agencies. Never pay via personal e-wallet transfers to individuals.
Scammers post attractive rental properties near Disney World at below-market prices on listing sites or via social media. They request full upfront payment by wire transfer or gift card. The property either does not exist or is not theirs to rent.
How to avoid it
Book only through platforms with buyer protection such as Airbnb, VRBO, or Booking.com. Never pay by wire, Zelle, Venmo, or gift card. If a deal looks far below market rate, treat it as a red flag.
Fraudulent rental listings posted on Kijiji and Craigslist advertise Halifax properties at well below market rates. Victims pay a deposit or full amount upfront, only to find the property does not exist or is not available. This is one of the most reported scams in Nova Scotia according to government advisories.
How to avoid it
Only book rentals through established platforms with verified reviews (Airbnb, VRBO). Never pay a deposit via e-transfer or wire to a private individual. If a price looks significantly below market, treat it as a red flag. Verify the listing exists on Google Street View before paying anything.
Taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers collecting tourists from Indira Gandhi International Airport or New Delhi Railway Station claim that the hotel the tourist has booked is closed, flooded, under renovation, or has lost its license. The driver may even pretend to call the hotel and hand the phone to the tourist — the call is actually to an accomplice posing as hotel staff who confirms the false story. Tourists are then taken to a commission-paying property in Paharganj or Karol Bagh that is typically lower quality and overpriced.
How to avoid it
Call your hotel directly using a number you looked up independently before accepting any driver claims. Pre-book airport transfers through your hotel or use the official prepaid taxi booth inside the terminal. Show the driver your booking confirmation on your phone — a legitimate driver will take you to your booked hotel.
Fraudulent rental listings for beachfront apartments in Malaga appear on social media and informal booking sites. Victims pay deposits or full amounts upfront and find no property on arrival.
How to avoid it
Book only through Airbnb, Booking.com, or established agencies. Never transfer money directly to a private individual outside a verified platform.
Taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers tell arriving tourists their booked hotel is "closed," "flooded," "under renovation," or "full" and redirect them to a different hotel where the driver earns a substantial commission. The false claim is designed to make tourists abandon valid reservations.
How to avoid it
Always call your hotel directly to confirm your booking before accepting any driver's claim that it is unavailable. Do not cancel a confirmed booking based on anything a driver tells you. Book hotels through verified platforms with customer protection.
