Homestays in villages like Cat Cat, Ta Van, and Lao Chai are booked through intermediaries in Sapa town who collect full payment upfront. Travelers arrive to find the accommodation significantly inferior to what was described: dirt floors instead of the advertised wooden rooms, no hot water, no toilet facilities, or a completely different host family. Refund requests are met with claims that the payment was non-refundable or has already been passed to the family.
