Street scams are the oldest documented form of tourist fraud. They rely not on technology or deception but on the same cognitive vulnerabilities exploited for centuries: distraction, social obligation, manufactured urgency, and the discomfort of a public confrontation. The specific setups differ by city and culture, but the underlying mechanics are nearly identical worldwide.
The bracelet scam — documented most heavily in Paris, Rome, and Barcelona — works by creating a social debt. A stranger approaches, ties a bracelet or friendship token onto the tourist's wrist without asking, and then demands payment. The item is on your body. Removing it feels awkward. Refusing to pay feels like a moral failing. Most tourists pay to end the interaction. The same psychological framework underlies fake monk scams in Southeast Asia, where robed figures press "blessing beads" into tourist hands.
Distraction theft operates differently but with the same precision. One person bumps into the tourist, drops something, creates a scene, or asks for directions. While the tourist's attention is occupied, an accomplice removes wallets, phones, or bags. Las Ramblas in Barcelona, the area around the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech are among the most heavily documented locations in our database for this scam type.
The petition scam — popular in Paris and Prague — uses moral pressure. Individuals, often claiming to represent a charity or disability organization, approach tourists with clipboards and ask for signatures. Once signed, they demand a cash donation, sometimes with aggressive follow-through if the tourist refuses.
Shell games and three-card monte are documented in cities from New York to Madrid. What appears to be a game of chance is in fact a controlled performance. Drive-by robbery by thieves on motorcycles, mopeds, and bicycles is a formally documented and increasing threat in Santo Domingo. The US Embassy issued a specific advisory in June 2025 warning citizens against using motoconchos (informal motorcycle taxis) and flagging motorcycle-based street crime. Criminals approach pedestrians at speed, snatch phones, bags, or jewelry, and accelerate away before victims can react. The tactic can cause physical injury when items are worn or held tightly. The National Police reported a significant concentration of armed robberies in Santo Domingo in 2025.
How to avoid it
Keep phones out of sight when walking on streets, particularly on the Malecón and busy tourist routes. Carry bags across the body with the strap on the side away from traffic. Remove visible jewelry before walking in public areas. If a motorcyclist slows alongside you, move toward a building entrance or group of people. Use ride-hailing apps like Uber rather than walking long distances in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
Organized pickpocket teams operate at Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West train stations, particularly during peak summer months. One member creates a distraction — commonly by grabbing a boarding passenger's luggage and lifting it as if offering help — while an accomplice works the victim's pockets, bag, or fanny pack. Bern cantonal police conducted a specific enforcement operation in summer 2025, detaining approximately 20 suspects across Interlaken, Grindelwald, and Lauterbrunnen after a surge in reports.
How to avoid it
If anyone unexpectedly touches or grabs your luggage in a train station, immediately place your hands on your pockets and valuables rather than focusing on the distraction. Keep bags zipped and facing inward, and carry valuables in inner pockets or a neck pouch. Do not let a stranger assist with your luggage unless you have specifically asked.
Thieves on motorcycles or on foot target pedestrians using smartphones in the Chapinero neighborhood, particularly along Carrera 7 and around the Chapinero Alto and LGBT-friendly bar strip on Calle 62. The snatch typically happens in seconds — a rider pulls alongside the sidewalk, a passenger grabs the phone, and the motorcycle accelerates before the victim can react. The area sees heightened incidents on weekend nights when foot traffic and distraction levels are high.
How to avoid it
Keep your phone out of sight or in a front pocket when walking on busy Chapinero streets. If you must use your phone, step into a shop or doorway. Never walk while looking down at your screen near the road edge. Use navigation via earphones with the phone stowed rather than holding it up. Stay on well-lit central stretches of Carrera 7 and avoid side streets after dark.
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is one of Germany's busiest train stations and a known pickpocketing hotspot, with organized groups working the escalators, S-Bahn platforms, and the crowded waiting hall. A seemingly friendly local — often well-dressed and fluent in English — approaches tourists near Kampot's riverside strip or at guesthouses and invites them to a private home for a card game or social gathering. Once inside, victims are pressured or coerced into playing rigged card games and lose large sums of money. In more serious incidents reported across Cambodia, victims have been forced at gunpoint to withdraw cash from ATMs. Multiple government advisories including the US State Department, Australian DFAT, and Canadian DFAT have flagged this as an active scheme.
How to avoid it
Never accept invitations to private homes from strangers you have just met, regardless of how friendly or legitimate they seem. If someone insists on showing you a "local experience" or card game, decline firmly. Tell your guesthouse where you are going if you accept any invitation from a new acquaintance.
Plainclothes individuals approach tourists claiming to be police officers or anti-fraud agents, often flashing fake badges. They claim to be investigating counterfeit currency, drug trafficking, or illegal vendors in the area and ask to inspect your wallet or passport. During the "inspection," they steal cash or memorize card details. Some now wear fake official vests and pretend to radio their station to appear more credible.
How to avoid it
Real Italian police do not conduct random cash inspections of tourists on the street. If approached, refuse politely and insist on being taken to the nearest official police station (questura) to conduct any check. Never hand over your wallet, passport, or any card to someone approaching you unsolicited on the street.
Drink spiking with GHB and other sedatives has been documented at several Lower Broadway venues and rooftop bars in Nashville. Victims typically experience rapid incapacitation after a single drink that was either tampered with at the bar or handed to them by a stranger, and incidents have resulted in robbery and assault.
How to avoid it
Never accept drinks from strangers, keep your glass in sight at all times, and use a buddy system when drinking on Broadway. If you feel suddenly disoriented after only one or two drinks, seek staff assistance immediately and call 911.
Cape Town has a documented pattern of armed muggings targeting tourists on popular walking paths, including routes up Lion's Head, Signal Hill Road, and the lower slopes of Table Mountain near Tafelberg Road.
