Batam's shopping centres in Nagoya and Lubuk Baja are well known for counterfeit branded goods, and vendors actively lure tourists with promises of authentic products at deep discounts. Some vendors show authentic items for inspection before switching to lower-quality counterfeits during packaging. Items that appear to be genuine Singaporean or international brands are almost universally fakes.
