Money changers operating at or near Batam's ferry terminals offer exchange rates displayed on boards but then shortchange customers through fast counting, folded notes, or switching denominations during handover. Visitors who have just arrived from Singapore and need rupiah immediately are the primary targets. Some changers position themselves before the official counter inside the terminal.
