How it works

Bars along Olas Altas Street and the surrounding blocks of Zona Romántica (Colonia Emiliano Zapata) have been documented spiking tourists' drinks with sedatives or excessive alcohol, then presenting bills in the thousands of dollars for "bottle service" or "VIP tables" the victim did not knowingly agree to. Accomplices posing as friendly locals invite tourists to specific venues. Victims are sometimes escorted to an ATM to withdraw cash while still disoriented. This pattern is distinct from ordinary overcharging and involves deliberate incapacitation.
