Hotel Lobby and Reception Theft by Distraction Teams

Teams of two to four individuals posing as fellow hotel guests target tourists at hotel reception desks and lobbies during check-in and check-out, when travelers are distracted by paperwork, credit card payments, and luggage management. One team member engages the victim in conversation while others rifle through carry-on bags, lift travel wallets from side pockets, or remove passports from open bags placed on the counter. A documented incident at a Lucerne hotel in September 2025 resulted in the theft of a passport, two credit cards, and approximately 200 CHF, with the thieves attempting ATM withdrawals within ten minutes of the theft.
