Is Pattaya Safe for Tourists in 2026?

Well-dressed men or women near Central Festival Mall and along Second Road approach tourists with a "limited-time" invitation to a government gem export sale or wholesale event, claiming foreigners can buy at duty-free export prices and resell at home for profit. The gemstones purchased are low-grade or synthetic, worth a fraction of the price paid, and the store refuses returns once the tourist has left Thailand.

How to avoid: Reject all unsolicited invitations to gem sales, wholesale events, or "factory direct" shops regardless of how official the invitation looks. The Thai government does not sponsor tourist gem sales. Legitimate gemstones are bought from certified dealers under the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association.

Where: Approach typically happens near Central Festival Pattaya Beach mall on Beach Road, Second Road near Pattaya Klang intersection, and tourist-heavy areas of North Pattaya

In Pattaya's Walking Street and Buakhao area bars, tourists' drinks are spiked with sedatives or excessive alcohol. Victims wake up having been robbed of cash, cards, and phones, or with large unauthorized charges on their credit cards.

How to avoid: Never leave your drink unattended. Pour drinks yourself from sealed bottles where possible. Drink in groups rather than alone. Be wary of anyone overly insistent on buying you drinks. Know the emergency number: 1155 (Tourist Police).

Fraudulent travel booking sites with names resembling Booking.com or Agoda clone the listings of real Pattaya hotels and accept payments for rooms that have no actual reservation attached. Victims discover the scam only when they arrive at the hotel and are told no reservation exists under their name. The fake platforms show as legitimate in Google search results and issue PDF confirmation emails with authentic-looking logos.

How to avoid: Book only through official hotel websites or major OTA platforms you access directly by typing the URL. Verify your reservation by calling the hotel directly after booking. If the nightly rate is more than 25% below the hotel's own site, treat it as suspicious.

Where: Scam sites advertise properties primarily on Beach Road, Second Road, Pratamnak Hill, and Jomtien Beach areas of Pattaya

Solo tourists, particularly male travellers, report drinks being spiked with sedatives in Pattaya bars. The victim is then robbed of cash, phone, and bank cards while incapacitated. In some cases a fraudulent ATM withdrawal is made while the victim is still disoriented.

How to avoid: Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers. Travel with companions and watch out for each other. If you feel suddenly very drowsy after just one or two drinks, alert a trusted companion immediately and seek medical attention.
