Around the Yu Garden bazaar and Chenghuangmiao (City God Temple) area, individuals claim to be licensed cultural guides and offer a detailed "ancient Shanghai" walking tour. The tour ends with a mandatory visit to a relative's souvenir shop where tourists are pressured to buy overpriced jade or lacquerware as the guide's "commission gift". The guiding licence, if shown, is often a convincing fake.
