Drink-Spiking in Nightclubs

Drink-spiking incidents are reported regularly at clubs along Rua dos Tabajaras and the Praia de Iracema nightlife strip. Victims are typically offered a free drink by a new acquaintance or find their unattended drink has been tampered with. The sedative is used to facilitate theft of phones, wallets, and cards, and in some cases sexual assault. Cases cluster on weekends and during major events like Carnaval and Fortal.
