Fake Police Document Check Shakedown

Individuals posing as plainclothes police officers approach tourists in downtown San José — particularly on Avenida Central and around Parque Central — claiming to need to inspect their documents, currency, or bags for counterfeit bills or drug residue. The goal is to access the tourist's wallet, passport, or cash under the guise of an official search, and either steal directly or demand a fine to be paid on the spot. Legitimate Costa Rican police (who wear uniforms with clear identification) do not conduct impromptu cash inspections of tourists.
